Certified Translation

A certified translation is a legally valid translation that has the same legal status as the document in the original language. In Finland, certified translations are prepared by translators who have completed the authorised translator’s exam. An authorised (or sworn) translator signs and stamps the translation to confirm that it corresponds to the original document. The translator does not, however, verify the authenticity of the source document.

How to Order a Certified Translations?

1 Requesting a Quote

Please send us your document as a scanned PDF or image file by using our quotation form or by emailing us at [email protected]. Large or confidential documents you can sent to us through TransferNow with [email protected] as the recipient's email.

2 Ordering

Once you have received our quote, please let us know if you approve the price and turnaround time and will place an order. Please also give us your mailing address, billing address (if different from your mailing address) and other billing information along with your approval.

3 Billing

We will email you our invoice after we have completed the translation. The cost of postage (standard letter or Posti Small Parcel rates) is included in the price. If you want your translation delivered as a registered letter, a postage and handling fee will be added to the price.

4 Delivery

Option 1

Translation from a PDF or image file
▪ The translation will be done on the basis of the file you emailed us or sent through our quotation form.
▪ A copy of the original document will be attached to the translation.
▪ You will receive the translation by email (PDF file) and post mail (on paper).

Option 2

Translation from the original document
▪ Send your document directly to our translator by registered post. We will provide you with the translator’s address.
▪ You will receive the translation by email (PDF file) and recorded delivery (on paper, along with the original document).

5 Further Information

Translations of official documents (such as certificates, contracts and documents from the authorities or courts) usually need to be certified translations. However, we recommend that you contact the party that needs the translation to ask whether a certified translation is required. In some cases, an ordinary translation bearing the translation agency’s stamp is enough. For example, this may be the case if there is no authorised translator for the specific language pair. Translations of official documents, such as certificates, contracts and documents from the authorities or courts, usually need to be certified translations. However, we recommend that you contact the party that needs the translation to ask whether a certified translation is required.

If you intend to present the translation to a foreign authority, you may also need an Apostille certificate. You can get an Apostille certificate from a notary public at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency to confirm the translator’s right to sign the document. A legally valid translation by an authorised translator is often sufficient, but we recommend you contact the party receiving the translation to check what is required.

Pricing for Certified Translations

Certified translations are priced on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature, scope and layout of the document. The language pair and urgency also affect the price.

Certified translations cost more than ordinary translations because the translator spends more time writing and laying out the document. Authorised translators also charge an additional fee for certifying the translation.
